### TESTING!!!

Tomorrow my fifth grade will be taking the state science test and next week both classes will take the reading, language, and math state tests.  I feel like I have prepared them as well as I can. Today we took some down time in the fifth grade. They began working on a math project that will be due on Monday...details to come later...Then I decided to pull out some Discovery video clips to review each strand of science.  I hope all the students don't get stressed out and remember to R-E-L-A-X.....

### 3D shapes and Euler's formula

I was reviewing old pictures of geometry activities to put in centers. I came across several I thought I would share.
Angles
I read Sir Cumference and the Great Knight of Angleland by Cindy Neuschwander to the students. They drew a mural of the town in the story making acute and obtuse angles. ﻿

We read Sir Cumference and the Sword and the Cone by Cindy Neuchwander and constructed 3D shapes with toothpicks, marshmallows, and gum drops. They also colored and constructed nets and build a town out of them.

This year I added the Angry Birds nets! I found it on Angry Birds.

### Geome-Tree

I was inspired from a pic on Pinterest to create this Geome-Tree. As a review of area and circumference of a circle, my students worked in small groups cutting different sized circles and finding area and circumference of each. They wrote the formulas and worked the problems on the circles. Using their circles, we made this Geome-tree in the hallway by our classroom.

### Measurement and Fractions

Today I pulled out a worksheet from Laura Candler's website called the Giant's Ruler. I needed to work on measurement and equivalent fractions with my 6th graders. Knowing they needed some sort of manipulative, I searched through all my bins for something to use. I remember a fellow teacher building a big inch with cubes. I finally pulled out the unifix cubes and started playing with them. I figured that we could represent the Giant's Ruler with the cubes.

1.  I asked the students to get out 17 black cubes and make a tower.  They then repalced the first and last one with a green cube to represent the numbers 0 and 1.
2.  Then we discussed what would be the middle (and called it the median). They said that was 1/2 of the tower.  They replaced it with a green cube as well.
3.  I told them to put their fingers on the first and middle green cube.  Then to find the median of that section and replace it with a yellow cube.  They did the same to find the median of the second seciton and replaced it with another yellow.
4.  Basically repeated step 3 but they placed their fingers on the green and closest yellow and found the median and replaced that cube with a purple.
5.  I passed out sentence strips and they placed the tower on the strip. Under each block they named it a fraction. Starting with the green being 0, they named the black 1/16, the purple 2/16, the next black 3/16, etc.

6. One student told me that some of the fractions had even numbers in the numerator and denominator and that we could divide them both by two. They did this until all fractions were simplified to lowest terms.
7.  I brought in the vocabulary of reduce, simplify, divide, fractions, equivalent, equal, ruler, even, half, fourth, eighths,  sixteenths, whole, simplify, denominator, numerator, median during the activity and listed them on the back of the sentence strip.
8.  When the students completed the sentence strip, we named it our "BIG" inch and they filled out the Giant's Ruler worksheet.
9.  I gave them a piece of construction paper to describe each vocabulary word in words, pictures, or examples.  The tutor that helps our class suggested they fold the paper into sixteenths because we had discussed 16 vocabulary words.  The students did a great job of describing their vocabulary words!

### Math Journals

I have seen some very great examples of math journals using foldables on different blogs. I plan on starting to work on the Master journal this summer so I can have it to go by. Also if a student is absent they can use mine as a guide. Some things important things in the journals: vocabulary and definitions, worked examples, rules, reflections, foldables, and use bright colors! Do any other teachers out there have any input on journals in the math classroom? I know that writing is a big part of common core standards. Since we will be embracing that very soon, I want to use writing effectively.

### Master Certification with Renaissance Learning

My 5th grade made Master Class in Accelerated Math today! They have mastered a total of 792 objectives as a class in the last 18 weeks!

### Fractions with Manipulatives-Pattern Blocks

After I attended that training from Carnegie Learning this weekend, I kept thinking to myself I have done that activity before... I found in my big box of center materials the pattern blocks and task cards that were very similar to what I had done in the workshop.  I have linked that place I got it below the pictures. The 5th graders really caught on quickly and did well today.

### Prime and Composite Chart

Steps: 1.  Write the numbers from 1-102 in rows of 6.
2.  Put an X on 1 because it's not prime or composite.
3.  Circle the number two, it is prime, draw a line down the column under 2 because those numbers are all multiples of 2.
4.  Draw a line down the column that starts with 4 and 6 because they are even and multiples of 2.
5.  Circle the number 3, it is prime, draw a line down the column under 3 because those numbers are all multiples of 3.
6. Circle the number 5, it is prime, draw diagonal line to the left, then follow the pattern marking out multiples of 5.
7.  Circle the number 7, it is prime, draw diagonal line to the right, then follow the pattern marking out multiples of 7.
8. The rest of the numbers should be circled because they are PRIME!!!!

This is great for visual learners and those students who have a photographic memory .

### Prime and Composite Numbers with Color Tiles

One of my objectives for 5th grade math is differentiating between prime and composite numbers by using models.  Color tiles work well for this objective.  I reviewed arrays from 3rd grade with them while discussing the vocabulary prime, composite, factor, multiple, and array.

To begin with, I read on Math Goodies a neat way to explain it linking it to perimeter and area. The way I am going to explain it to my students is building a garden If I said I wanted a garden with 5 sq. ft. the dimensions can only be 1 ft. + 1 ft.  + 5 ft.  + 5 ft. , and the area would be 5 sq. ft. This is the ONLY way to build the garden to those specifications.
 Stress that this being the only way makes it prime!!
If you can build the garden MORE THAN ONE way, it is a composite number.
 More than one way to build make is composite!!

### Box and Whisker with manipulatives

I learned how to use color tiles to show box and whisker structure at a recent grade level meeting. The instructor said to get 7 tiles (or you could use 11) and line them up. Tell the students to pull the middle tile to the top. This is the median or middle of the box. Then you have two groups left. Pull the median of each group to the top.  The one from the left group is named the lower quartile. The median from the right side is named the upper quartile. This makes the outside of your box.  The farthest tiles to the left and right are the outliers and they are the lower extremes which will be connected to the box creating whiskers.﻿

Then after explaining the process, I had the students write the numbers 3-9 on the same tiles and put them in numerical order from least to greatest and follow the same steps as the previous example.
After this we worked some example test prep problems. They had a much better understanding of the objective and I did too! :)
