Measurement and Density

6th grade:
Measurement seems to always be my lowest percentage on state tests.  I have 6th graders who don't know which is longer a mile or a yard!!! I guess I am going to have them write their measurement facts and memorize them like I did when I was in elementary. I can tell you at the drop of a hat that there are 5, 280 ft in a mile or that there are 16 oz in a pound.

We did a measurement activity today. The students traced and measured their friend. I hung the finished products out in the hall for other students to guess who is who! They had to measure in US Customary and in the Metric System.

5th grade:
We took a trip to the science lab to do an experiment on density. The students were amazed that it didn't matter what order I poured the liquids in that they would still stack the same every time. I had them write a paragraph explaining what happened in the experiment and why.

State Test Stress

As the days count down to state tests, all teachers feel the stress. My students recently took a practice state test and I was not so thrilled with the results. But I am trying to remind myself that even though these state level tests are important, I know in my heart that I have been working very hard with my students.  A test is a snap shot of one day of the student's ability.
There are so many factors as to how a child performs on a test on a given day.
  • What if they didn't get enough sleep?
  • What if they have test anxiety?
  • What if they woke up on the wrong side of the bed?
As long as I have tried my best to teach the skills they need and showed my students that I care for them, I have made a difference in their lives.

You Know You're a Teacher When...

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TEACHER?
by Jeff Foxworthy

1. You can hear 25 voices behind you and know exactly which one belongs to the child out of line.
2. You get a secret thrill out of laminating something.
3. You walk into a store and hear the words "It's Ms/Mr.> _________" and know you have been spotted.
4. You have 25 people that accidentally call you Mom/Dad at one time or another.
5. You can eat a multi-course meal in under twenty minutes.
6. You've trained yourself to go to the bathroom at two distinct times of the day: lunch and planning period.
7. You start saving other people's trash, because most likely, you can use that toilet paper tube or plastic butter tub for something in the classroom.
8. You believe the teachers' lounge should be equipped with a margarita machine.
9. You want to slap the next person who says "Must be nice to work 8 to 3 and have summers off."
10. You believe chocolate is a food group.
11. You can tell if it's a full moon without ever looking outside.
12. You believe that unspeakable evils will befall you if anyone says "Boy, the kids sure are mellow today."
13. You feel the urge to talk to strange children and correct their behavior when you are out in public.
14. You believe in aerial spraying of Ritalin.
15. You think caffeine should be available in intravenous form.
16. You spend more money on school stuff than you do on your own needs.
17. You can't pass the school supply aisle without getting at least five items!
18. You ask your friends if the left hand turn he just made was a "good choice or a bad choice."
19. You find true beauty in a can full of perfectly sharpened pencils
20. You are secretly addicted to hand sanitizer and finally,
21. You understand instantaneously why a child behaves a certain way after meeting his or her parents.

Tour of my room

These are pictures from the beginning of the year. It's not quite as neat now as it should be, but I'm working on it. Getting down to around 30 instructional days until state testing, so test prep is the main focus in my room right now. I LOVE bulletin boards that are three-dimensional and the bigger the better!!
My Computer is acting crazy today, so some pics are sideways...Sorry, just turn your head! :)

Getting Organized

I found this website and OH HOW I LOVE IT!!!!
Just the motivation I need to get my classroom in order!!

Information overload!

I have become a recent addict of Pinterest and have found so many useful ideas! Although sometimes I feel like I have information overload and nowhere for it to go. If it goes in a binder on my shelf, I may or may not find it again. If it goes on my desk, it becomes lost. If I mark it on my Favorites, I probably won't look at it again. But if I pin it, I can look back at the pictures and remind myself. Pictures are worth a thousand words!
Check out my pins!
